Smooth Cruising on Ovation Yachts

As soon as Jim McLaren, general manager of Orange Coast Yachts in Newport Beach, California, came across the Seakeeper Gyro Stabil-ization System at the Fort Lauder-dale International Boat Show last year, he knew he had to have it. As a result, McLaren made sure the very first 52 Ovation he ordered from Silverton Marine of Millville, New Jersey for his dealer-ship had the state-of-the-art gyro installed.

"I felt that the Seakeeper Gyro would probably be the most important piece of equipment for boats since the invention of the autopilot" said McLaren.

In fact, Silverton Marine was so impressed with how the gyro performed on their 52 Ovation the company is now offering the unit as an option on its standard equipment list for the entire Ovation line. Supplied by Seakeeper distributor Mack Boring & Parts Company of Union, New Jersey, the revolutionary Sea-keeper Model 7000 Gyro uses the principles of gyro-dynamics to exert a powerful righting force that virtually eliminates boat rock and roll.

An entirely new concept in luxury cruising, the 52 Ovation is one of the first production boats to utilize Volvo's triple IPS propulsion system. A standard joystick offers one-handed maneuverability and unmatched docking capabilities.

Dedicated to constant advance-ment in design, engineering, manufacturing and the pursuit of value, Silverton recently unveiled its Ovation 55 Sport Yacht at the Miami International Boat Show. "During the sea trials in Delaware Bay, we used the joystick to rock the boat back and forth," said Silverton technician Rich Karrasch.

"Without the gyro it was rough, but once we turned the unit on, it only took 15 seconds for the boat to completely stop rocking. We were all very impressed with how responsive it was."

"We tested the Seakeeper Gyro just outside the entrance of Newport Harbor where there are 3' swells," said McLaren. "The Ovation was incredibly stable, even at a complete stop. We could have sat there as long as we wanted. The boat didn't rock at all."

Sunseeker 82-South of France

They loved the yacht, but hated the roll. And when they learned of the Seakeeper Model 7000 gyro they knew they had to try it.

Their 2007 Sunseeker 82 "G Force" was the perfect yacht by all descriptions however, the owner demanded more. "Once he and the captain learned of the Seakeeper Gyro they knew they had to try it," said Yves Mottin Berger of Seakeepers local distributor Saim France. "I believe they would only prefer to use the yacht in the most perfect conditions and I know they wanted to use it more."

After evaluating the application, Seakeeper engineers specified two Model 7000 gyros for this yacht based on the specific displacement and transverse metacentric height. Saim France, then took the lead by hiring Mr. Thierry Lefevre owner of Nemo Marine Services (Cannes, France), who identified a possible location and created an installation plan. Mr. Thierry's 30+ years in the yacht services industry allowed him to use his extensive knowledge to creatively find the space within the engine room to accommodate two gyros.

The gyro works as advertised according to Captain John Lloyd, "The berth I am on in Monaco lies beam on to the entrance, so frequently we are victim to the swells coming through. On those occasions when I run the gyros I enjoy a significant reduction in roll."

The Sunseeker 82 is one of the most highly regarded yachts in the world today. Because of its high-performance handling and speed attributes, external fins could not be considered as they would add drag and negatively affect the overall handling.

For G Force, the Seakeeper gyro became the perfect complement and the obvious choice.

Marquis 72

As the company so eloquently states, "Marquis embodies perfection in the art of yacht building". This perfection is embodied not only in design but also in performance.

When Marquis wanted to add stabilization to the extensive list of features and options on their flagship 72, it didnt take long for their search to end at Seakeeper. "Marquis is an up-scale brand driven by their customers' expectations. They approached Seakeeper looking for a complete stabilizer system - for both zero-speed and while underway. They also preferred an internal system as external appendages could affect the yacht's overall performance," according to John Kermet, VP of Sales for Seakeeper.

Tucked neatly between the twin engines, a single Seakeeper M7000 gyro was the perfect choice for this vessel. Marquis is now offering Seakeeper as an option to all clients requesting enhanced stability.
