What’s your title with Seakeeper?

Accounting Lead

Briefly describe your role at Seakeeper as if you were explaining it to someone in another department. What’s your day-to-day like? What’s your piece in the Seakeeper puzzle?

I oversee making sure that vendors receive their payments in a timely fashion. I manage our fixed assets for the company. I make sure that transactions are hitting the correct accounts.

What were you doing before you joined the Seakeeper team?

I was a stay-at-home mom.

When did you start at Seakeeper?

July 2019

How have things changed since then?

When I started, working from home was not allowed. Now, most of the accounting team is remote. We have also implemented so many new processes to make jobs more efficient and less time-consuming.

What’s the most interesting or challenging job you’ve been confronted with at Seakeeper?

I think I am going to have to say Expense Reports. When I started, I was manually creating them for employees and within a few months we created an upload process.  It was managing around 2,000 transactions monthly. Making sure that employees were completing them in a timely manner, while following policy. In June, we officially closed out the old expense report process and I was able to be part of that. It was fulfilling to be at the start of the process, take steps back and allow other team members to manage, and then step back in and wrap up the final stages.

What is one of your biggest personal accomplishments at Seakeeper?

I have been able to do a lot of on-the-job training. Six years ago, I started as an accounting assistant, not sure if I still wanted to have a career in accounting. Today I am an accounting lead and found my love for accounting again.

What do you like most about working at Seakeeper?

I enjoy my accounting team. We work well together and are always willing to help each other out. We can make jokes even through distance. It makes working “alone” not so lonely.

What do you find most challenging about your particular role?

Honestly, the most challenging part of my job isn’t crunching numbers or balancing budgets- it’s chasing down approvals so I can do those things on time. At this point, I’m pretty sure ‘professional teams nudger” should be in my job description.

Our company is growing fast—what advice would you give to new hires?

Be willing to learn! Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Advocate for yourself as an employee!

Who’s one person at Seakeeper that’s had the greatest impact on your time here?

Just 1?! Not possible.

Carter Grant- I would not have started going back to school to get my bachelor’s without encouragement from him.

Dan Winters- He is always willing to teach and answer questions. He has allowed me to grow as an employee.

Tyler Engel- Even in a short time here at Seakeeper, he has encouraged me to pursue some big career goals!

Lastly and most importantly Bob Glidden- He has put up with a lot of crap from me. He has figured out what type of learner and thinker I am. He knows not to answer every question I send because I will figure it out shortly. He has encouraged me to keep pursuing my bachelor’s degree but also making sure I put myself and family first. He genuinely cares about his team members. He wants us to grow. He encourages questions. He has been a great mentor, but also a great friend.

Do you have a personal motto or mantra? What is it? Why?

Not really. I do say “It’s fine” a lot. It’s more of a way for me to accept what is happening and carry on.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise the rest of us.

I am from a very small town in Southeast Kansas. The population is less than 2,000. My high school had less than 100 students. For fun, we would park in the middle of main street and hang out.
